“Phishing” is a fraudulent e-mail message that is sent with the purpose of stealing personal and financial information. View an example of a fraudulent e-mail.

Generally, these e-mails appear to come from a well known company (as seen in the “From” line of the e-mail) and they ask you to provide them with personal or financial information by clicking on a link. These messages are almost always characterized by their urgent nature. The most common information requests in Phishing e-mails are:

passwords

usernames

PIN number

social security number

account number

mother’s maiden name
